Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a meeting with central and state health agencies through video conferencing on Saturday to discuss health-related issues arising out of the pre-monsoon floods in Assam.
The meeting reviewed measures put in place by central institutions and state government agencies to ensure effective flood management in Assam.
Mandaviya emphasized the need for strong coordination between central and state health institutions for effective management of floods and any other emergency. He emphasized the need for the readiness of critical care equipment, oxygen, hospital beds as well as the availability of clean drinking water in the flood-affected areas. He also emphasized on preventive health care and greater awareness among communities about vector-borne and water-borne diseases.
The Union Health Minister has urged officials to work on a flood management model to deal with the recurring flood situation in Assam. He directed them to prepare an online database listing all important information like availability of beds, oxygen and other medical facilities to ensure effective management of any medical emergency.
Mandaviya also urged the officials to ensure that the Health and Wellness Centers are well equipped with required medicines, functional medical equipment and other facilities. He ordered the training of all health workers at AB-HWC so that they are well equipped to provide essential health services that are critically needed in such emergency situations.
“ASHAs, ANMs, CHOs etc should know their roles and responsibilities in case of any emergency. Advanced training will ensure that they are effective in providing health services during flood emergency management,” he said.
Avinash Joshi, Principal Secretary (Health), Assam informed that all necessary medicines are in stock. Dy. Commissioners from the six districts of Barpeta, Kamrup, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dima Hasao and Dibrugarh, who joined the review meeting, assured that they are regularly reviewing preparedness to ensure effective management of potential floods.
Dr Atul Goel, DGHS, MOHFW said that their regional offices are ready to support the state government. He added that a team of specialists from AIIMS Guwahati and NCDC would be deployed to help the state whenever required. The Union Health Minister has assured all support to the Flood Management Center in the state.
