Indian street food is a storehouse of all kinds of amazing and interesting treats. Whether it is the crispy moong dal ki pakodi or the flavourful vada pav, street-style chaat is one of our all-time favorites. While there are plenty of snack items on India’s street food radar, there is also a gamut of interesting desserts. We recently encountered one such yummy dessert on our daily scrolls through our social media feeds. All the way from Vrindavan, this street-style dessert is called ‘Malai Tarbooz’ and looks exactly like watermelon fruit – except that it is actually something entirely different. The video of the dessert from Vrindavan was shared on Instagram reels by Ekta who goes by the name ‘thecheeseaddict_2193’ – a popular Delhi-based food blogger. “Very unique sweet tried near the entry gate of Prem Mandir, Vrindavan,” read the caption to the video. The clip of the sweet from Vrindavan has received a million views and 46.4k likes since the time it was shared.
In the video, the blogger explained how she came across this sweet on her recent visit to Vrindavan. Priced at just Rs 20, it was quite a unique-looking treat that we had never seen before. It looked exactly like watermelon except that it was not. Further, she said that it tasted like gulab jamun with a layer of malai on top of it!
The unique sweet from Vrindavan piqued the curiosity of the internet. Many commented that a similar sweet could be found on the streets of Agra, Mathura and Delhi’s Chandni Chowk too. “Yeh toh Chandni mein bhi milta hai 120 rs ka. [You can get this for 120 rupees in Chandni Chowk]” Others wanted to try it and said it looks quite tasty. “Looks delicious,” someone wrote while another said, “Tasty!”
